Sustainable Aviation Fuel What You Need to Know?
As global aviation continues its shift toward more sustainable operations, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is emerging as a key pillar in reducing the industry’s carbon footprint. This shift is not just a trend-it’s becoming a legal requirement in many jurisdictions. For business aviation and charter operators worldwide, staying compliant is essential. At MoonJet Flight Support, we’re fully equipped to support you through the SAF transition-ensuring availability, compliance, and seamless coordination wherever your missions take you.
What is Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)?
SAF is a renewable alternative to traditional jet fuel, produced from sustainable feedstocks such as used cooking oil, municipal solid waste, agricultural residues, and even captured carbon via synthetic processes. The critical advantage? SAF can reduce lifecycle CO₂ emissions by up to 80%, contributing meaningfully to global climate goals while remaining compatible with current aircraft engines and fuel infrastructure.
Why SAF Matters for Business & Private Aviation?
In 2025, SAF mandates came into effect across the EU and the UK, starting at 2% minimum blend at designated airports. These requirements will ramp up aggressively-reaching 6% by 2030 and 70% by 2050 in the EU.
This means that any aircraft-commercial or private-refueling at airports in these regions must comply, regardless of where the operator is based.
-
- Uplift requirements apply to all outbound flights from EU/UK airports.
- Operators must uplift at least 90% of required fuel at the departure airport to prevent emissions evasion through tankering.
- Pricing will reflect a SAF surcharge, significantly higher than Jet A1, often 3-5x more expensive.
- Operators must maintain accurate documentation, including proof of SAF blends and fuel volumes.
Impact on Foreign Operators, What You Need to Know?
SAF mandates do not just affect European operators. They apply to all operators refueling at EU/UK airports, regardless of country of registry.
For example:
-
- An Asian charter operator planning a departure from Paris Le Bourget (LFPB) must comply with the 2% SAF uplift even if the rest of the mission operates outside Europe.
- A Gulfstream registered in Singapore, refueling at Geneva (LSGG), must ensure they refuel at least 90% of their required fuel on-site, and accept the higher blended SAF fuel price.
- Tankering fuel into Europe to avoid SAF costs or bypass SAF uplift obligations is no longer allowed due to anti-evasion rules under the ReFuelEU Aviation regulation.
This creates additional complexity for non-European operators, especially those not yet accustomed to SAF procurement, documentation, and compliance. MoonJet is here to ensure that your flights meet local regulations-without delays or surprises.
How MoonJet Simplifies SAF for Global Operators?
At MoonJet, our role is to reduce the operational and regulatory complexity of SAF mandates-especially for foreign and long-haul operators unfamiliar with regional policies. We provide:
-
- SAF Uplift Planning & Availability Monitoring
We maintain a global database of SAF availability and will guide you on where and how to plan your fuel stops accordingly.
- SAF Uplift Planning & Availability Monitoring
-
- Fuel Credit & Certificate Coordination
When physical SAF is not available, we help arrange book-and-claim or SAF credit schemes that maintain your emissions compliance and audit trail.
- Fuel Credit & Certificate Coordination
-
- Permit & Route Planning Support
Our dispatch team ensures that SAF uplift aligns with your overflight, ETOPS, or airport slot strategy, minimizing both cost and delays.
- Permit & Route Planning Support
-
- Coordination with FBOs & Ground Handlers
We work directly with FBOs to ensure SAF requests are correctly communicated and coordinated with refueling vendors and ramp teams especially important when fuel loads must meet new legal percentages.
- Coordination with FBOs & Ground Handlers
-
- Flight Briefing Documentation
Your flight package will include clear SAF documentation, including certificates of analysis, blending details, and local compliance notes for your records.
