US & EU Air Passenger Travel Increases by 1003%
The National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) has revealed that air traffic to and from Europe has peaked at 4.29 million passengers, representing a 1003% increase compared to April 2021.
The top countries where Americans travelled in the last month include Mexico (3.09 million), Canada (1.68 million), the United Kingdom (1.19 million), and the Dominican Republic (793,000) and Germany (653,000).
Data from Statista.com reveals the number of visitors to the United States from the Western European countries was peaking at 14.56 million before the pandemic broke. In 2020, this rate dropped by 85%, barely making 2.22 million, to further drop to 1.7 million in 2021. In the last year, the number of Western Europeans travelling to the EU dropped by 23.4% compared to 2020 and 88.3% compared to pre-pandemic levels.
On the other hand, the number of outbound trips from the United States to Europe during 2020 differed as Western Europe accounted for the highest number of trips – 2.32 million, followed by Northern Europe with 2.03 million trips while the Southern Europe and Mediterranean destinations count about 1.66 million operated flights. In addition, Central and Eastern Europe recorded the fewest trips operated as about 620,000 of those were reported.
The highest record of Europeans visiting the United States in the last decade was recorded in 2015, with a total of 14.8 million visitors being recorded, as Statista’s data reveals.
NTTO’s data shows the international air traffic passenger arrivals and departures reached nearly 15.5 million in April 2022, representing a 167% increase compared to the corresponding time in 2021. However, the number of passengers has reached 73% of pre-pandemic levels so far.
Furthermore, the main ports serving international locations were New York (JFK) with 2.15 million arrivals and departures, followed by Miami (MIA) with 1.77 million, Los Angeles (LAX) with 1.27 million, Newark (EWR) with 1.03 million and Chicago (ORD) with 860,000.
